The Allurion Gastric Balloon is a revolutionary device that offers a non-surgical, non-permanent solution for those wanting assistance with weight loss.

The balloon is placed without the need for endoscopy or a hospital stay, and does not require manual removal. In addition, as it is non-surgical there is no recovery time.

How it works
So what is the Allurion Gastric Balloon?

It is a vegan balloon that is placed in the stomach. Once filled, it reduces the space in the stomach leading to less hunger. It lasts on average 16 weeks, during which time you will be supported by your surgeon and dietitian to lose weight and build sustainable healthier habits. At the end of these 16 weeks, the balloon will deflate and you will pass it naturally.

Your progress is tracked with the use of the Allurion Scale, Allurion Tracker watch and the Allurion App. These all help to keep you accountable, to stay on track and reach your weight loss goals.

How much weight can I lose with the Allurion Gastric Balloon?

The Allurion Program is a 6-month weight loss program. Patients can lose on average 10-15% of their total body weight. This is sustained in 95% of patients at 12 months.

Who is eligible for the Allurion Gastric Balloon?

We require patients to meet the following criteria:

  • Age over 18yrs
  • BMI >27
  • Attempts with diets have not been successful
  • Do not drink alcohol in excess
  • Not currently pregnant
  • Ready to make a change

Make an appointment to discuss with one of our surgeons if the Allurion Gastric Balloon is the right choice for you. Our surgeons are trained in bariatric surgery but know that not everyone is willing, or able, to have weight loss surgery. As such the Allurion Gastric Balloon is a great option for those who may not qualify for surgery, for those wanting a non-permanent solution or for those not ready to undergo surgery.

The balloon is filled with 550mls of fluid. This takes up space within the stomach- giving you a holiday from hunger! This means you are more likely to stick to your healthy food choices when you aren’t experiencing hunger pangs.

Once the Allurgion Gastric Balloon is in place, it will remain in the stomach for 16 weeks. But the support from your surgeon and dietitian will continue for the full 6 months.

This all happens down in our radiology department. The patient swallows a capsule which is connected to a catheter (long, thin tube). Once in the stomach, an xray is performed to confirm it is in position. The balloon is then filled with 550mls of water and a further xray performed.

You will be coached through the insertion by your surgeon who is present for the entire procedure. It takes around 20 minutes.

Almost all patients will be able to swallow the capsule. You will be given water to assist this process. If it is still not working, the surgeon will place a stylet to help stiffen the catheter and assist with the insertion.

After placement, some may experience nausea and abdominal cramping. You will be given medications to help alleviate these symptoms.

While some people will be able to return to work and other activities straight away, others may need some time to adjust. We recommend planning for 2 days off work after the balloon insertion.
